And Then There Was Blog

I suppose there should be an introduction of sorts here. I'm Matt, I'm a writing student at Champlain College, in Burlington, Vermont, and I want to be this guy:

I come from Montpelier, Vermont, just 45 minutes down the road. I'm of the firm belief that Montpelier is the greatest boring place on Earth, but that might be just me (or it could also be fact).

I suppose we'll see how this whole blogging thing turns out for me, though I can't imagine that I have anything to say that's interesting enough to gather any kind of reader base, but I guess we'll see. I like how the blogosphere, and things like Twitter, let people put themselves out there with nothing to lose, so you get people who emerge from the woodwork simply because they're interesting, when otherwise they would have gone completely unnoticed. For example, there's a decently popular blog that I follow that's a collection of quotes, photographs, and the like for the artistically-minded (I'm not a hipster, I swear) called GoodMorningAndGoodnight.com. I discovered it through StumbleUpon, which means that the only reason came up is that other people promoted it as interesting.

An example of something from GM&GN

The downside to this kind of global blogging community is that there ends up being a lot of chaff (read: people
who think they're interesting), or things that are just irrelevant to what I care about, so it's impossible to sort through the masses to find things that I do care about. As a result, I'm sure there are countless blogs out there buried among all the irrelevant crap that I would love to read, but will never see.

I said I was a writing student before, but I'm more a student of thinking and speaking than writing. Writing is something I have a complex relationship with, and I have neither the time nor the motivation to explain said relationship right now. As a result, I really have no idea what I'm doing with my life. I figure writing is something that'll help me no matter what I do, so I study it. I guess I could be a teacher, or a journalist, or something along those lines. Hell, I could even be a professional slam poet, like that guy up there. I guess I'll see.
